HughesNet Satellite Internet Broadband Stimulus
|
During the middle of the U.S. economic crisis of 2009, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvsetment Act
(also known as the "Broadband Stimulus Plan" or "Stimulus Act"). This legislation was enacted to get America back on track
through job creation and the promotion of consumer spending.
The total stimulus package was $787 billion. Of this, a little over $7 billion was distributed to the Rural
Utilies Service (RUS). Of this amount, a large portion was earmarked to "expand broadband access and adoption in
communities across the U.S., which will increase jobs, spur investments in technology and infrastructure, and provide
long-term economic benefits".

Broadband Stimulus with HughesNet
Over $50 million of this $7 billion was given to HughesNet to pass in full directly to U.S. citizens
throughout rural America. HughesNet was chosen as the satellite internet provider to receive the
most government funds to allocate to citizens.
It is important to note that the funds for this
government high speed internet program
were limited. They were used once and now gone forever.
This was a one-time government
stimulus allocation.
