Government High Speed Internet
|
|
Congress passed, in early 2009, landmark legislation known as ARRA (the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act).
This bill was enacted to create and save American jobs, to stimulate domestic and foreign investment in America
and to increase government accountability. Within this Recovery Act was stated the objective to increase
access to high speed internet for rural Americans. Seven billion dollars was allocated to a government entity that
was then responsible to work with private partners to bring government high speed internet
to those without Cable or DSL internet access.

Government High Speed Satellite Internet
One of these private partners that the government chose to help bring subsidized internet
to rural America (and the only satellite internet provider chosen) was HughesNet. For a very
limited time (aka, only while funds were still available), new, qualifying HughesNet customers were able to
have all up-front installation, activation and eqipment fees waived and the government funds were also used to
reduce the monthly access fee for any HughesNet plan selected. Those eligible for the
Recovery Act Internet program had great benefits. This program is now closed!

Government High Speed Internet Program
When you call, we just input your address into a program and it is ran against a government database that
has been set up to determine eligibility. The database uses census tract information from the 2010 census.
Eligibility for the
government satellite internet program is
determined by this data alone. The government uses
it's "best guess" to determine if your address currently has no access to broadband speed internet. No
other factors (such as your income or current internet service) are used in determining qualification for
the program. Please note that the government database is not perfect and is sometimes accurate.
There was nothing HughesNet could do about this. This program is now closed
